Reading these figures

Is the median the salary a sponsored worker must be paid?

No. An employer must pay at least the annual market salary rate (what an Australian worker in the same job and workplace earns) and at least the relevant income threshold. The median is a guide to typical pay across a whole occupation group, and doesn’t allow for experience, location, industry or seniority.

Which threshold applies?

The Core Skills Income Threshold ($79,423) applies to the 482 Core Skills stream and the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme; the Specialist Skills Income Threshold ($146,576) to the 482 Specialist Skills stream; and the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold ($79,423) to the 494 and 187. They apply by the date the nomination is lodged and are indexed every 1 July.

Why is a group’s median missing?

Jobs and Skills Australia doesn’t publish a median where the survey estimate isn’t reliable enough (a relative standard error of 25% or more), or for 6-digit occupations.

Who is counted?

Full-time non-managerial employees paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. Yearly figures are the weekly median × 52.
